Our Network and COVID-19

Not surprisingly, most of the knowledge creating and dissemination activities are now revolving around covid-19 and how it is affecting our daily life as well as our future.

Below are some news and information contributed by members of our network on such activities.

Please come back again for updates.

Data and Estimates

Sherine Shawky, Senior Research Scientist, The Social Research Center, The American University in Cairo, produced, especially for our platform, a snapshot on covid-19 experience in Egypt. Access it here.

The Platform FACEBOOK page commenced its first open discussion with a set of questions on the various cautionary procedures adopted by the Arab countries in response to the pandemic, the most vulnerable group during this period of time as well as the needed procedures to improve the data efficiency in assessing the pandemic infection and mortality rates.  The page received 46 comments from individuals in four countries namely Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon and Sudan. You can access the discussion here and read a summary here.

We believe you have already checked the webinar on covid-19 inequities organized by our platform.

Another interesting webinar, organized by the Alternative Policy Solution project, hosted Hania Sholkamy who discussed the challenges and options for social protection in Egypt at the time of the pandemic.

NEW STUDIES and Other Activities

The Covid-19 pandemic has had a profound effect on social and economic life. Not only does the disease pose an imminent threat to life but it has also proven to be a disruptor of livelihoods. Battling the disease involves not only health and health system interventions but also demands a revision of social and economic policies and of social protection provisions.

Researchers in our network have been involved in a  number of initiatives and projects that aim to understand the linkages of disease to social protection, enable capacity in policy making in the field of social and economic policy and provide an academic grounding in the social study of diseases and epidemics.
